60 m long welding system for railcars
For the railcar specialist WBN waggonbau-niesky.com, CLOOS designed a robotic welding system with a 60 metre overhead track in only four weeks. With this system, the aluminium railcar assemblies with a length of up to 20 m can be manufactured efficiently and smoothly. Werner Weinhold and Klaus-Dieter Jeschke of WBN are full of praise: “Within four weeks only, we planned the project to be ready for a decision and placed the order with CLOOS.” Only six months after the decision, the new robotic welding system could be put into operation. Weinhold: “The project advanced smoothly hand in hand between us and CLOOS.”
Flexibility improved, customer satisfied
The overhead track was installed by Cloos during the ongoing production
process. In this way, expensive, drawn-out alteration measures and the
attendant production interruptions were dispensed with. The decision to procure
both the robotic and the welding technology from one source proved its worth,
too. “All components of the system harmonize very well with each other”,
explains welding engineer Jeschke. The factory planner Werner Weinhold adds:
“The new welding system provides us with the necessary flexibility to be able
to respond to the very different requirements of our customers. Finally, the
manufacturing quality, price and reliability are right, too.”

Technical specifications
of the robotic welding system
- Two six-axle welding robots, each mounted on a cantilever arm with a horizontal traverse path of 2.5 m
- Use of the latest welding technology produces an optimal weld quality despite high welding speeds
- Exact positioning, briefest operating times and high path accuracies, free of play axle mounting and absolute position sensor
- Repeat accuracy lower than 0.1 mm
- Adaptive laser sensor counterbalances component tolerances and ensures highest weld seam quality
